At 24 Months, Children
? Uses 100 words or more
? Uses at least two pronouns (e.g. “you”, “me”, “mine”)
? Consistently combines 2 to 4 words in short phrases (e.g. “Daddy hat”, “Truck go down”)
? Words are understood by others half the time
? Forms words and sounds easily and effortlessly
? Follows two-step directions (e.g. “Go find your teddy and show it to grandma”)
? Enjoys being around and playing with other children (e.g. sharing or to offering toys to peers)
? Begins to imitate peers’ actions and words
? Holds book the right way up and turns pages one at a time
? Pretends by acting out daily and special routines with toys (e.g. cooking a meal or a birthday party)
? Can run or walk fast
? Walks downstairs holding only onto parent’s finger
? Kicks ball forward
? Tries to undress self (e.g. takes off/opens coat, pulls down pants)
? Can throw a small ball overhand
? Scribbles with crayons / marks paper
? Feeds him/herself with a spoon, spilling little 


At 18 Months, Children
? Uses at least 20 words consistently even if not clear (e.g. labeling food, toys, people)
? Makes at least 4 different consonant sounds (e.g. p, b, m, n, d, g, w, h)
? Imitates words and gestures
? Responds with words or gestures to simple questions (e.g. “Where’s teddy?”, “What’s that?”)
? Understands the concepts of “in & out”, “off & on”
? Points to three or more body parts when asked
? Points to familiar pictures using one finger
? Enjoys being read to and sharing simple books with you
? Demonstrates some pretend play with toys (e.g. gives teddy a drink, pretends a bowl is a hat)
? Walks alone (feet may have wide gait)
? Walks up and down stairs with assistance
? Climbs onto low step, table or stool
? Likes to retrieve and carry objects
? Takes off own socks and hat
? Stacks 3 blocks
? Brings spoon to mouth in attempts to self feed


At 12 Months, Children
? Follows simple 1-step directions e.g. “sit down”
? Looks across the room to a toy when adult points to it
? Uses specific gestures to communicate (e.g. waves hi/bye, shakes head “no”)
? Uses three or more “words” (same sounds to indicate same object or person)
? Brings/ extends toys to show you
? Gets your attention using sounds, gestures and pointing while looking at your eyes
? Consistently points to request
? “Performs” for social attention and praise
? Plays social games with you (e.g. “Peek-A-Boo”, “patty cake”)
? Combines a lot of sounds together as though talking (e.g. “abada badu abee”)
? Shows interest in simple picture books
? Turns pages of books a few at a time
? Removes objects from containers (e.g. food, blocks, toys)
? Helps a little while being dressed (e.g. extends arm to put in sleeve)
? Lifts cup to mouth with two hands to drink
? Picks up and eats finger foods
? Stands alone for 2 seconds or more
? Walks sideways holding on to furniture
? Lowers self from standing with control, not falling on bottom


At 9 Months, Children
? Responds to his/her name
? Responds to telephone ringing or a knock at the door
? Understands being told “no”
? Gets what she/he wants through gestures (e.g. reaching to be picked up)
? Plays social games with you (e.g. “Peek-A-Boo”)
? Babbles and repeats sounds such as “babababa” or “duhduhduh”
? Feeds self cracker or cookie
? Mouths and chews on objects
? Looks for dropped objects or hidden toy
? Sits without support for a few minutes
? Moves forward while on stomach/ starting to crawl or rolls to get around the room
? Travels by rolling, scooting or creeping
? Stands while holding onto something
? Picks up small objects using tips of thumb and index finger
? Releases objects voluntarily
? Bangs two objects together or claps


At 6 Months, Children
? Orients to sounds
? Startles in response to loud noises
? Makes different cries for different needs (i.e. hungry, tired)
? Watches your face as you talk
? Smiles/laughs in response to your smiles and laughter
? Imitates coughs or other sounds (e.g. “ah”, “eh”, “buh”)
? Tracks lights visually
? Looks around and is alert to surroundings
? Rolls from back to stomach or stomach to back
? Pushes up on hands when on tummy
? Keeps head level when pulled to sitting position
? Brings hands or toy to mouth
? Reaches for familiar person or toy
? Transfers object from one hand to the other
? Eats from a spoon (e.g. infant cereal)
